Acceptance can vary

A website displaying card logos does not prove that every card, issuer or account will be accepted. Availability can depend on merchant configuration, card network, issuer controls, online-payment settings, identity checks and temporary risk controls. Check the actual official checkout before entering a card number.

Review the currency, amount, any conversion or fee disclosure, and the final merchant name. A bank’s card authorisation and the merchant’s account credit are separate events. If the bank records a completed transaction but the merchant page shows an error, avoid paying again until you have checked both records.

Use the issuer’s authentication channel

  • Enter details only on the verified merchant page with a secure connection.
  • Approve an issuer authentication prompt only when it matches the transaction you initiated.
  • Never tell a caller your card PIN, online-banking password or one-time code.
  • Keep the bank notification and merchant confirmation or error reference.
  • If the card is charged unexpectedly, contact the issuer through the number on the card or official banking app.

Disputes and duplicate authorisations

A pending card authorisation may not be the same as a settled charge. The issuing bank can explain whether an item is pending, reversed or posted. A merchant can identify an order or payment reference. Ask each party about the exact record and do not rely only on a browser message.

Do not send a full card image or security code to a merchant chat. Share only the minimum transaction identifiers through the bank’s verified support process. If you suspect card details were exposed, contact the issuer promptly and follow its card-freeze or replacement guidance.

The banking app shows an authorisation but the cashier shows failure

An authorisation may be displayed separately from a completed card payment. Ask your issuer whether the entry is pending or posted, and ask the merchant whether it captured the payment. Save the amount, time and last four digits if required; never send the full card number or security code by chat.

Do not count on a pending amount being released at a specific time without confirmation from your issuer.
